Le mwjqspecie appartenenti a questo mwjgtaxon presentano di regola mwjwpelle verrucosa, grandi mwkaghiandole parotoidi situate posteriormente agli mwkqocchi, e mwkgpupille orizzontali. La colorazione è tendenzialmente giallo-grigiastra oppure bruno-verdastra, priva di un vero e proprio disegno, ma può variare con le stagioni, con il sesso e con l'età. Le mwkwzampe posteriori sono corte e tozze, mentre il muso appare appiattito. Nei mwlamaschi, di solito un po' più piccoli delle compagne, durante il periodo dell'accoppiamento si può apprezzare la formazione di cuscinetti nuziali scuri sulle tre mwlqdita interne delle zampe anteriori.cite-ref-ab-4-0[4]

La dieta è mwnqcarnivora e comprende mwnganimali di piccola taglia, quali mwnwinsetti, mwoagasteropodi, mwoqelminti, ma talvolta anche piccoli mwogvertebrati.cite-ref-ab-4-1[4]

Si tratta di specie soprattutto notturne e terragnole. I mwqqmaschi effettuano richiami in coro durante la notte. Durante l'accoppiamento, la femmina (che di regola è muta) viene afferrata appena dietro le zampe anteriori.cite-ref-ab-4-2[4] In alcune specie, in caso di aggressione, le grandi mwrgghiandole paratoidi possono secernere una miscela di sostanze allucinogene, o comunque ulceranti anche per l'uomo, tra cui la 5-metossi-N,N-mwrwdimetiltriptamina, la mwsabufotenina, la S-metossi-N-metiltriptamina, la mwsqserotonina e la 5-idrossi-N-metiltriptamina.cite-ref-5[5]

Durante la stagione mwuariproduttiva tendono a raggrupparsi anche in grande numero nei corsi d'acqua a flusso lento e negli mwuqstagni. Una sola femmina può produrre anche molte migliaia di mwuguova, che tendono a disporsi in lunghi cordoni che vengono alloggiati lungo il corso d'acqua.cite-ref-ab-4-3[4]

Il mwwqgenere, per come lo si considera oggi, ha distribuzione prettamente mwwgpaleartica e mwwworientale, con una maggiore mwxabiodiversità nel paleartico orientale, essendo presente dalla mwxqPenisola iberica fino al mwxgGiappone, in mwxwNordafrica ed in mwyaIndocina.cite-ref-asw-2-1[2]

Queste mwzgspecie abitano mwzwzone umide, mwaaboschi e mwaqforeste a quota anche elevata, in cui siano presenti piccoli specchi d'acqua o rivi a flusso lento.cite-ref-ab-4-4[4]
